Week 11 Project 3

3 Drawings
This week I took pictures of objects that had reflections and drew them I n order to demonstrate the fact that reflections are everywhere and are not always what one thinks of when one thinks of a "stereotypical reflection." I used charcoal, pastel, and a wet sponge in order to creat the drawings of the faucet handle and light switch. Each of these drawings is an ordinary object that actually demonstartes either light reflecting off of it (like the faucet handle) or an object itself being reflected (like the light switch). For my other piece, I took more of an abstract approach to the idea of reflection and was inspired by the Rorschach inkblot test, so I used that as the base that unifies the piece (being a symmetrical reflection) and then took ink and added an effect of random, somewhat disorganized marks.

Week 10 Project 3

3 Drawings
This week, I focused more on creating abstract pieces based on the idea of reflection. For the first drawing, I tried to convey the beauty of a sun's reflection on the water as it is setting, and I used really dark black for the sky and water and white to bring out the sun and its reflection. In my second piece, I thought about sound waves and their unique ability to bounce or reflect off of things, so I created an abstract piece based on the reflection of sound waves. For my third piece, I used the reflection of the moon on the water to inspire a piece with a sort of misty, unknown feeling to it, with the moon clearly outlined and its reflection barely visible as it fades away. In this project, I am aiming to explore different types of reflections and create pieces of reflection or inspired by reflection. I think the idea of reflection is incredible, and I am amazed at the fact that it can be seen anywhere and everywhere. Images can be reflected; light can be reflected; sound can be reflected, and all of these off of almost any surface. Also, reflection has multiple meanings, being an abstract concept as well, which I will also incorporate into my drawings as the project progresses.

Week 9 Project 3

3 Drawings
For this project, the subject matter I'm exploring is the idea of reflection - reflection of light, color, images, etc. I used the picture of sunglasses as inspiration for my first drawing; I tried to make it so that you see sunglasses, and the only way you're seeing the scene is through the reflection on the sunglasses. For my second piece, I used the picture of the mountains reflecting on water as a reference for my drawing, and I tried to emulate the reflected image in the photograph using black and white and middle tones. For my third drawing, I used the reflection of light off of shiny objects as the basis of my piece, and I found a computer-generated picture of a faucet in order to accomplish this idea. My goal is to use more of a variety of tones in order to create a less stylized, more realistic version of what I'm trying to draw, even if it's just parts of the object of reference.

Drawings 10/7/15 and Inspiration/Reference

Drawings
I used charcoal and a dry paintbrush to achieve a more smooth look on some of these pieces, while on a couple I kept my strokes of charcoal loose and linear.

Inspiration/Reference
I found these pictures online and tried emulate the style while making some aspects my own unique style.

Mark-making Study 10/5/15

I researched artists online and found Karen Schwartz's pieces interesting.  The paintings are abstract enough to keep you interested and to make you wonder what she is really depicting, but there are some defining aspects in each piece that make some objects/ideas more clear.

3 Drawings and a Sketch 9/30/15

3 Drawings
I used a fine-point Sharpie to see if I could make it look like there is shading while also keeping the piece clean and precise because of the small tip of the pen.
More realistic elephant with some shading. Attempted to make the marks have sort of a "scratchy" feel.

Attempted scribble drawing/sketch; loose marks, some more squiggly, some more linear.

Stylized elephant with fine point sharpie; more exact marks.

In-class Gesture Drawings and Mark-Making Studies So Far

These are quick gesture drawings and pieces that I did when we modeled for each other or drew objects in short periods of time.
